Research: Editing

EDITING:

The definition of editing is the way the scene is put together, at whatever pace. Editing is the film technique that emphasises the action when the audience gives a chilled or scared reaction to the film. At, certain times of the film being joined together, the pace of the film is determined  the length of each shot. The length of shot also determines the mood of the audience. Editing is also an micro element of mis-en scene.

TRAILERS:

Lots of editing styles are used by trailers, In order to connect and attract a target audience to a film, trailer is the perfect way to accomplish that.

Trailers mainly uses the film technique of fade to black. This technique occurs when one shot moves into another with a black dissolve in between. This film technique is mainly used in thrillers to connote with the theme.

Furthermore, trailers at times use the technique of wipe cut, when the film shot slides to another.

TECHNIQUES USED DURING FILM:
In films or adverts a film shot could disintegrates into another this is called dissolve.

REACTION SHOT:
When a film shot is used as a portrayal of someone's response to a event or statement it is called a reaction shot. Pscycho is a perfect example that conveys reaction shot.

SLOW EDITING:
Slow editing happens when at a slow tempo clips are put together in order to create the feeling of suspense among the audience and for the to capture the action.

The matrix contains slow editing. In order, to make the audience capture the action, creating more tension amongst them.
The good the bad and the ugly also contains the duel with the standoff finale.

FAST EDITING:
Alternatively, If the film clips are being put together at a fast tempo then It is fast editing. The aim of fast editing is to create suspense within the audience as well as thrill.

SHOT REVERSE SHOT AND 180 DEGREE RULE:
In addition, a film edit that is taking place during a conversation between two characters is called a shot reverse shot one shot will be quickly followed by another. Shot reverse shot originates from the 180 degree rule, a film guideline that states that there should always be a left right relationship viewing of the two characters during their conversation. This is order to prevent confusion among the viewing audience.

JUMP CUT:
Finally, when a camera makes a movement that is drastic and It is noticeable the name for it is a Jump cut, the edit will almost Jump. This could confuse the audience.

GENRE:

For everything there is a genre. Genre is a type or class which forms a category. This very well applies to films. The main aim of films is to entertain the viewing audience with different types of entertainment, this is where film genre is essential.

FILM GENRE:

Film genre means a category that a film falls into. One film genre that I will be highlighting is thriller.

 THRILLER AND CODES AND CONVETIONS:

Thriller is a type of film that always creates suspense and anxiety. It is quite easy to spot a thriller film when you notice it's codes and conventions. Codes and conventions are common features that are used in a type of film in order to make it typical. The codes and conventions for a thriller film would be Low key lighting,In other words with a few areas of contrast having dark tones for filming. A protagonist which means a leading character in the film. Antagonist who is the villain of the film that has a hidden motive. A build of tension(situation of anxiety). Slow editing to capture a crucial scene, death and music to create thrill.

THRILLER MOVIE:

A perfect example of a thriller movie is the black swan which stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
The plot of the movie is about a ballerina who aspires to dance for a ballet company. However her world is turned upside down when she has dark experiences. This film contains a protagonist(which is played by Natalie Portman), antagonist (played by Mila Kunis), and a build of tension. These are the main codes and conventions of a thriller movie.

SUB GENRE:

When there are two or more film genres being acted in one film, we call it a sub genre for example sci fi-action  or comedy horror. In the context of thriller sub genres would be: action thrillers, sci fi thrillers, romantic thrillers, erotic thrillers and much more.

EXAMPLES OF SUB GENRE THRILLERS:

An example of a sub genre movie Involving a thriller is The Bodyguard. The bodyguard is a romantic thriller starring Kevin Costner and the late Whitney Houston. A former secret service agent is hired to protect a famous singer however she has a wayward lifestyle. The romance comes in when the singer falls in love with him.

Another unique example of a sub genre movie is Argo starring Ben Affleck. Argo is a historical thriller, based on the true story of the six U.S diplomats that were trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis in 1980. This film contains the codes and conventions of a thriller film. Since this is an event that really happened, Argo is a sub genre movie.

THEMES:
There could be all types of themes in a thriller movie. The main themes of thriller are: Death, Crime, Suspense, Vengeance, Violence and Rivalry. These themes make up a thriller movie on its own. If the movie was a sub genre more themes would have been added.

RESPONSE OF THE AUDIENCE:
There will always be a reaction towards any film from the audience. For thrillers the reaction would be mainly be excitement, due to the anxiety and tension that happens in thriller movies. However at the same time, there is a scared reaction from the audience due to those two factors.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
The target audience for thrillers tend to be people from the age of 13+. The reason is because they can naturally can cope with the tension and are mature enough to view violent and scary content. Where as a child, they would not like to experience the feeling of fear when watching thrillers and they are mentally and physically immature to view violent content. For example a rape scnene would be too drastic for a child to view.

This post has made me learn the basics of thriller. The genre, sub-genre etc.

Research:Cinematography

CINEMATOGRAPHY:

Cinematography is the main aspect of film it means seeing the way the shot is framed, the angle its being taken in and the movement of camera. These techniques give each character a different representation, therefore the audience will react in different way to each character. There are 3 elements I will be highlighting: Camera movement, Shots and Angle.

CAMERA SHOTS:

There are different names for different types of shots that are taken.

First there is a long shot. Long shot occurs when the cameraman or woman would want to record the whole frame of a character with the background for a particular scene.

Another, is a mid shot this is when the cameraman is at mid distance with the character and the background. This means the whole frame of the character is not shown along with the background. This means that the character is more important than its surroundings.

In addition, a extreme long shot is another camera shot, It would mostly focus on the background rather than the character. Example if a earthquake or an explosion is happening in a film the background would be the main focus.

Furthermore, close up is another film shot that is used. This film shot only shows the face of a character to view in detail the reaction or expression on his face. This tells the audiences that for the moment the character is more significant either in a good way or a bad way.

Extreme close up is a film shot that really gets close to the face of a character, only the eyes will show. This again shows the audience the significance of a character. Extreme close up is mainly shown in western films. In thrillers, this would cause suspense among the audience

Mid close up, is the film shot between mid shot and close up. A camera man might want to show the character but without getting too close.

Establishing shot is when only the background is filmed. The significance of this will be where a scene of a film would take place. The audience would be aware of this.

CAMERA ANGLES:

At times a character maybe filmed at a low angle, this could be during a film scene where a character might be attacked. The director might film in this angle to make a character weak and inferior to the audience.

Other times, a character might be filmed from a low angle the reason for this could be to make the character strong, superior, and intimidating to the audience.

CAMERA MOVEMENT:

When a camera is moving there are different names for it depending on the way its moving.

Panning movement  happens when a camera is moving across. This would mainly happen in a action movie. The audience will have clear insight on the character
Tilt movement occurs when the camera is moving up or down to make the audience view the image or an action from upwards. Zoom movement happens when the camera views closer or furher away to capture action, for the benefit of the audience.
. Panning, zoom and Tilt shot.

Crane movement occurs when there is flexibility of the camera.
Crane shot is used to collabarate with the flexible action that is taking palce making the audience amazed and filled with tension.

Zoom movement is when the camera either zooms in to capture an emotion or it zooms out to capture the background.

At times, the camera can look like It's coming from the person's view this technique is called point of view. The audience may find this realisitic.
 Point of view movement

Other times it would look like the camera is moving with the person this technique is called hand held. This technique partly makes the film realsitic to the audience.

The video i have selected shows the camera movements of: Point of view, handheld
