Research:Cinematography

CINEMATOGRAPHY:

Cinematography is the main aspect of film it means seeing the way the shot is framed, the angle its being taken in and the movement of camera. These techniques give each character a different representation, therefore the audience will react in different way to each character. There are 3 elements I will be highlighting: Camera movement, Shots and Angle.

CAMERA SHOTS:

There are different names for different types of shots that are taken.

First there is a long shot. Long shot occurs when the cameraman or woman would want to record the whole frame of a character with the background for a particular scene.

Another, is a mid shot this is when the cameraman is at mid distance with the character and the background. This means the whole frame of the character is not shown along with the background. This means that the character is more important than its surroundings.

In addition, a extreme long shot is another camera shot, It would mostly focus on the background rather than the character. Example if a earthquake or an explosion is happening in a film the background would be the main focus.

Furthermore, close up is another film shot that is used. This film shot only shows the face of a character to view in detail the reaction or expression on his face. This tells the audiences that for the moment the character is more significant either in a good way or a bad way.

Extreme close up is a film shot that really gets close to the face of a character, only the eyes will show. This again shows the audience the significance of a character. Extreme close up is mainly shown in western films. In thrillers, this would cause suspense among the audience

Mid close up, is the film shot between mid shot and close up. A camera man might want to show the character but without getting too close.

Establishing shot is when only the background is filmed. The significance of this will be where a scene of a film would take place. The audience would be aware of this.

CAMERA ANGLES:

At times a character maybe filmed at a low angle, this could be during a film scene where a character might be attacked. The director might film in this angle to make a character weak and inferior to the audience.

Other times, a character might be filmed from a low angle the reason for this could be to make the character strong, superior, and intimidating to the audience.

CAMERA MOVEMENT:

When a camera is moving there are different names for it depending on the way its moving.

Panning movement  happens when a camera is moving across. This would mainly happen in a action movie. The audience will have clear insight on the character
Tilt movement occurs when the camera is moving up or down to make the audience view the image or an action from upwards. Zoom movement happens when the camera views closer or furher away to capture action, for the benefit of the audience.
. Panning, zoom and Tilt shot.

Crane movement occurs when there is flexibility of the camera.
Crane shot is used to collabarate with the flexible action that is taking palce making the audience amazed and filled with tension.

Zoom movement is when the camera either zooms in to capture an emotion or it zooms out to capture the background.

At times, the camera can look like It's coming from the person's view this technique is called point of view. The audience may find this realisitic.
 Point of view movement

Other times it would look like the camera is moving with the person this technique is called hand held. This technique partly makes the film realsitic to the audience.

The video i have selected shows the camera movements of: Point of view, handheld

  1. A clear post and structure is clear. Terms are defined well with some analysis.

    To improve;
-provide thriller examples to support your definitions of camera shots. Look to analyse these examples
-low angle: rewrite the definition as it has the opposite effect to a high angle
-point of view and hald held are two different types of camera movements
-Thriller scene analysis. Analyse a scene identifying three effective uses of cinematography – use PEER
-Conclusion: what types of cinematography are you now planning to use and why?
